The ACPM presents its report on digital audio for the year 2023.
The Alliance for Press and Media Figures (ACPM) released its report on audio trends for 2023 earlier this month. The digital format continues to grow, with a 31% increase in listening time for radio and a 91% rise in podcast downloads.
On closer analysis of the figures, the ACPM highlights some key data, such as the breakdown of Active Listeners (AL) by device in France: 68% on smartphones, 11% on computers, 9% on smart speakers and 12% on other devices (TVs, tablets, consoles, etc.). The average listening time for digital radio is 40 minutes per session, with peak listening occurring between 6am and 9am.
Also, at the same time, Médiamétrie published the results of its eStat Podcast measurement. This system counts both the listening and downloads of previously broadcast podcasts as well as native podcasts, from its subscribers, for the period of January 2024.
Over 178 million French-language podcasts were listened to or downloaded worldwide during this period, an increase from 165 million in December.
France alone accounted for nearly 139 million podcast listens or downloads in that same period, compared to 129 million the previous month.
Over 5 billion active users on social media in 2023
This is according to an annual report published in early 2024. Over the past year, the number of active social media users has surpassed the five billion mark, representing 62.31% of the global population. This user base has grown by 5.61% in a year, whilst the global population has grown by 0.91%.
For comparison, 5.35 billion people have an internet connection. The network with the largest audience is Facebook from the META group, which alone has 2.19 billion users. This is ahead of Instagram with 1.65 billion users, closely followed by TikTok (1.56 billion).
The new challenges facing the press
According to IREP, the press remains the second-largest medium in terms of advertiser spending. In fact, every month, nearly 97% of the population read the press across all platforms.
To maintain its positioning, this media outlet and its editors must adopt innovative strategies to stand out in an ever-evolving media landscape.
Today's audiences are looking for content that reflects their local and daily concerns, and this is reflected in investments made in local media.
They accounted for 31.21% of the overall market in 2022 and continue to grow, demonstrating the increasing importance of this segment of the advertising market.
